The Tocqueville Prize

This international prize for political literature is awarded every two years most of the time at Château de Tocqueville to a person whose work is in line with the vision and values defended by Alexis de Tocqueville. It was created in 1979 by Alain Peyrefitte, a member of the Académie Française, former Minister Pierre Godefroy, Deputy of La Manche, and Count and Countess Guy d’Hérouville. The first recipient of the award was Raymond Aron and the last Henry Kissinger.

WHAT IT IS ?

The international jury awarding the Prize has been chaired for years by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. The new chair is former French Prime Minister Alain Juppé.py

The Tocqueville Prize identifies and rewards major political essays which contribute to stimulating the public debate about international affairs, particularly concerning the transatlantic relationship, and how they need to be handled between democracies on a multilateral basis has always been, and certainly remains in our troubled times, not only useful but necessary. The Foundation is involved in the Prize through the Association for the Alexis de Tocqueville Prize which funds and organizes it, chaired by Stéphanie de Tocqueville.
