Defend democracy and nurture the transatlantic relationship, inspired by Alexis de Tocqueville’s vision

A high-level debate brought together Françoise Mélonio and Polish Senator Kazimierz Ujazdowski, on the contemporary relevance of Tocqueville for Poland and for Europe, on the occasion of the publication of Françoise Mélonio’s latest book.
Moderated by Laure Mandeville, the discussion shed light on the major vulnerabilities of our democracies: the crisis of trust, populism, the temptation of despotism, the relationship to power, and the search for meaning.

More than ever, Tocqueville urges us to be active citizens and to mobilize in order to build our European future, amid the turmoil affecting our countries.
“Let us have for the future that salutary fear which makes us watchful and ready to fight, and not that paralyzing and enervating dread that weakens hearts and saps their strength.”

We warmly thank Chargé d’Affaires a.i. Wiesław Tarka for his welcome, the Embassy team for their invaluable cooperation, and all those who keep the spirit of the Tocqueville Conversations alive. Our special thanks go to Ambassador Jan Emeryk Rościszewski for his support for this project since its inception.
